Term 5 - St John's

Look at our fabulous learning for the term.

This term covers the month of May, a month where Mary is celebrated. To show our devotion to the Mother of God, and therefore also our mother, we made flowers for Mary which we presented to her in a special class ceremony. We then made these flowers into bouquets to present to Mary, with the rest of our school community, in a celebration assembly led by Year R.

RE

In RE, we've been learning about the Early Christians. We reminded ourselves that Jesus was Jewish and learnt about how the church was born at Pentecost, hot-seating Apostles about how they were able to have flames on their head without being burnt and how they could speak many languages so easily! We also learnt about the first Pope and how he came to have the job; we linked this with future Popes, discussing the sad passing of Pope Francis and how his successor would be chosen.

Maths

In Maths, we've been learning to count in fractions greater than one. We were very surprised to learn that the fraction can be written in a mixed number or an improper fraction and still represent the same number! We continued this into adding fractions, including mixed numbers and improper fractions, as well as subtracting fractions from mixed numbers.

English

In English, we've been learning to write a newspaper article. We had to learn to recite an article to help us learn to write our own.

In Science, we're learning about sound. We learnt about pitch - how high or low a sound is - and then examined the features of different instruments to make high and low pitch sounds. We discovered that a recorder makes a lower sound the more holes are covered while on a stringed instrument, thinner strings made higher pitched sounds. We also learnt about volume: did you know, the amount of vibrations created changes with the volume (how loud or quiet a sound is) of a sound? Finally, we looked at distance from a sound and how the volume changes the further away from a sound you are.

Geography

In Geography, we had some exciting visitors to help us understand the trade of our local area. Peel Ports came in and talked to us about all the commodities that come through the docks, including bananas, paper and steel. Next, we reminded ourselves of the Ordanance  Survey map symbols before using Digimaps to learn about the physical and human features on the Isle of Sheppey.
