St Edward's Catholic Primary School

Term 4

Welcome back to a new term. We hope you had a restful break and are looking forward to some warmer weather and the children are excited about the challenges and learning that they will have this term.

Below is the topic page for term 4 which outlines some of the things the children will be learning this term as well as some important dates.

RE

We have been learning about the different parts of Mass this term. After a Mass at church for Ash Wednesday we were able to see, hear and observe the important parts of the Mass and what they mean. We have learned about the things that happen at the beginning of Mass and how we say sorry. We looked at the importance of listening by looking at the different readings we would hear at Mass.

English

We have started the term by reading Fantastic Mr. Fox. We have used this as our inspiration in learning how to write a non chronological report all about foxes. We then moved our focus onto writing a persuasive letter to persuade someone to buy us a pet.

Maths

We have continued our work on multiplication and division, using known facts for our 2, 5 and 10 times tables and making the link between them to help us work out the calculations. We have used the connection of the 2 times tables to help us understand doubles and halves quickly.

We then moved onto our unit of measurement to work out length, mass, volume and capacity.

Science

The children have enjoyed carrying out many experiments in our topic of humans, including animals. We have looked more closely and investigated the human life cycle; exercise and the different ways it affects our bodies; a healthy and balanced diet and our own health and hygiene.

The children thoroughly enjoyed our Science Day where they were able to investigate waterproofing different materials. They had to decide what to investigate, how to carry out the test and set it up. At the end of the day they were able to share their ideas online to many other schools.

History

We have loved finding out and learning about extreme explorers. We began the topic by going on our own expedition around the school to discover some famous explorers and then find out where they explored and put them onto a timeline. We have compared the famous explorers; Christopher Columbus, Neil Armstrong and Tim Peake by looking and how they travelled and the equipment they took with them.

PE

We are immensely proud of the determination, courage and attitude of the children on their Learn to Ride Day. They had a wonderful day learning to ride and encouraging each other to keep trying and never give up. They all learned to ride a bike and become increasingly more and more confident as the day went on. Even if we did have a few bumps and grazes, they all tried their best and kept going.

We have honed our skills of control and balance throughout the term using ball skills and our different parts of our bodies.

DT

In this term's DT topic, we have practised our skills pf chopping, slicing, grating and whisking to plan, make and evaluate different things that we have made, including a fruit salad and a pizza!

Music

We have linked our topic in music to our topic in history by using the theme of space and using our bodies and voices to create a sequence of sounds to recreate the idea of travelling through space, landing on an unknown planet and the things we may encounter. We created a soundscape to put our ideas together, thinking about the dynamics and timbre.

Computing

We have continued to work on our understanding of spreadsheets form year 1 to use spreadsheets to help us work out different activities.

World Book Day

The children had a wonderful at school dressed up as their favourite book character. Throughout the day, the children listened to different stories and took part in exciting book related activities in different classes.

Class Assembly

The children did a fabulous job in leading the whole school and parents in an assembly about Saint Patrick. The girls began the assembly by showing off their Irish Dancing skills before we presented our assembly with prayers, readings and a song all about Saints and Saint Patrick. Well done everyone! So proud of you all!

Easter celebrations

The children enjoyed an Easter Bonnet parade and then the parents.
