This term, Year 5 will continue to develop their map skills: interpreting lines of latitude and longitude to navigate around the world as well as looking at different time zones. We will study what happens to the Earth's surface when tectonic plates collide and look at mountain ranges and volcanoes. We will recognise how most rivers begin their lives high up in the mountains. In readiness for term 3, we will study the Andes and its link to the start of the Amazon River.
This term, Year 5 will be learning about South America. We will study the country of Brazil and identify its connection with the Amazon River. We will identify settlements along the river and compare to other countries who rely on the river to move goods for trade. We will also research land use in Brazil and use population densities linked to infrastructures. We will study the Amazon Rainforest and recognise its biodiversity along with recognising the global problems created by its deforestation.
Term 5- How is Sheerness town similar and different to a village in the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil?
In term 5, we will be studying the waterways around The Isle of Sheppey: using OS maps to look at the location of key landmarks and the benefits of this. Researching about how rivers complement industry, will enhance our understanding of key aspects of human and physical geography of how Peel Ports import and export goods from the island. Looking at a small; area of Brazil that lies along the Amazon River, we will identify similarities and differences linked to Sheerness town. We will look at how bananas are grown and exported (some to Peel Ports) and consider how Fair trade supports framers in poorer countries.
