St Edward's Catholic Primary School

Term 5

Week 5

This week, we have been expanding our vocabulary and writing descriptively using exciting adjectives in English. In Maths, we have been looking at finding the difference between two numbers, and using this to give change. In Science, we looked closely at the patterns in tree trunks and even thought about the ages of trees by measuring how many hugs it takes us to wrap around the trunk! In RE, we have spoken about belief and faith, thinking about the things we believe in, even if we haven't seen them. We learned about Thomas and his doubts in Jesus' resurrection and what it means to trust in Jesus and God.

Week 4

This week, Year 1 have been writing the Owl Babies story, and have shown off their amazing handwriting! We have also been looking at dividing and sharing fairly in Maths, and have begun to understand and solve written division problems. In Art, Year 1 have made some fantastic drawings showing expression, using pictures of animals for inspiration. In Science, we went on a hunt for deciduous and evergreen trees, looking at if they had all their leaves or not.

Week 3

This week, in English, we have started the story 'Owl Babies' by Martin Waddell, and we have made actions to remember the story. We practised writing some of the story on whiteboards and showed off our lovely, neat handwriting! In Maths, we have been looking at capacities, and have been working lots with water and sand in different containers. In RE, we have continued to look at the Resurrection, particularly at the role of the Disciples. We continued our work on the giant recycled cross to signify the new life of Jesus, just like the new life of the materials we used.

Week 2

This week, we have had the opportunity to have some parents in to see our fantastic work in Phonics - thank you to those that came! We have then been using our phonics knowledge to help us write the Superworm story in English. In Maths, we have looked at counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, and decided what we could use to help us with this. In Science, we went on a plant hunt around the school and learned all about common plants and the parts of a plant. In Geography, we have been looking closely at the landmarks in and around Sheerness. In PE, we started to make our own dance routine, which went really well! In RE, we continued our learning about Easter Sunday, and have begun to make our own Year 1 cross.

Week 1

Our first week back after a nice, long Easter half-term, and Year 1 have had a lovely week. We have started to look at the Superworm story, and doing actions to help us remember it. We have continued with our learning in Phonics, and have done lots of Fred Finger reading to help us. We have also looked at Jesus' resurrection in RE, and adding 10s to 2 digit numbers in Maths. In Geography, we have been learning about birds eye views and Mutitjulu, in Australia, and in PE we have been doing some fun dancing!
