In Year 1, we will talk about how to get around the school. We will look at local landmarks and describe our journeys to and from school. We will also describe routes that we take when travelling around the area. We will learn about where Sheerness is in the UK and find the position of the UK on a map of the world. We will study areas of land and water around the world and learn more about the hot and cold places- linking the North and South Pole to the coldest areas. We will also learn about hotter continents and consider seasons and weather patterns.

Term 3: When it's winter in the UK, where is it summer in the world?

This term, Year 1 will be looking at Australia. We will be learning about the different types of landforms as well as the animals that you would find there: comparing these to animals that we find in the UK. We will look at indigenous people and learn about their culture and traditions. We will look at the Great Barrier Reef and identify what living things need to survive.

Term 5- How is Sheerness similar and different to Uluru (Australia)?

In term 5, we will recap on our learning from Term 1- linked to where Sheerness is in the UK. Observing, recognising and discussing key features within the local area, we will consider the benefits of humans living near the sea. Extending our knowledge linked to the continent of Oceania, we will complete a study of Uluru- comparing life near Ayers Rock to life in Sheerness: considering land use, development of infrastructures as well as farming and tourism. We will understand that people live in different places around the world and that teh climate and landforms will offer different opportunities.
