St Edward's Catholic Primary School

Year 5

Term 2- How did the Anglo Saxons influence life in Britain?

This term, Year 5, will be recognising changes to Britain at the end of the Roman era. We will learn about other periods of history that ran concurrently with the Anglo Saxons. We will research about what life was like in Anglo Saxon England and consider why they converted to Christianity. We will recognise significant individuals and the impacts that they had on society. We will pursue a line of enquiry to establish who was the most significant Anglo Saxon.

Term 4: What did the Mayans bring to their civilisation?

In term 4, we will learn about who the Maya were and where they lived. We will look at concurrent British history and learn about what was happening in Britain as well as  recognise the impact that the Mayan civilisation had on the world. Comparing and contrasting behaviours and achievements will enable us to identify that the Maya were an advanced community. Learning about Mayan belief, we will hypothesise ideas linked to faith and beliefs. Drawing conclusions we will look at theories based on evidence, thinking like a historian to consider, summarise and explain evidence that could be challenged and that which is conclusive.

Term 6- How has Sheppey changed from Victorian times to present?

In term 6, we will be discovering who the Victorians were and the changes that were made to society, including key inventions that significantly impact our lives today. We will look at how the Isle of Sheppey developed as a community as well as learn more about the history of the dockyard- through the original direction of Samuel Pepys.

With the SS Montgomery just off of our shores, we will ask questions about the events that led up to the sinking of the vessel. Additionally, we will consider significant changes across history- drawing informed conclusions- about how and why Sheppey has changed, recreationally, across time. Evaluating the significance of famous people, we will study those who were born on the island and recognise their impact and influence upon society.
